One of my absolute favourite games on the PS1! Driver 2 Havana.
A while ago I found the Havana map, so I decided to remake this game tech demo in unreal engine 5, to see how it would look with Lumen and Nanite, or if it was remade for PS5 or Xbox Series X.
I upscaled all the textures and de-pixelated them as much as possible (they were reallyyyy tiny, more pixelated than Minecraft graphics), to try to improve the overall graphics. It's not photorealistic at all but makes you appreciate the Havana architecture a little more.
I decided to create the traffic system from scratch (which maybe was not the best idea!). By far, the most time consuming, but eventually worked out. It's not exactly gta 5, but has has the basic gaming functionality to spawn cars, for cars to wait for each other, and for the player to possess the cars.
I'm using the Chaos Vehicle physics for all vehicles, which was a bit of a pain, since I had some Blueprints for Physx vehicles, that I created in unreal engine 4, but couldn't use.
The demo runs at 80FPS at 2K on my RTX 3070 with DLSS, however the framerate drops significantly when there's a lot of cars, with all physics enabled (CPU), as the Traffic system is not optimized.
FMOD is still not supported in UE5, so I had to settle with the existing engine sounds. The Havana track music was created by Robostomp, check out his his youtube channel and video here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4zIzP...
It's far from polished, but enjoyed working on this, found some interesting tutorials for car rigging, spline blueprints, traffic management...
I hope you enjoy it, and it brings back some gaming memories!
